So, my son has started grinding his teeth. UGH! That awful noise of teeth scraping against one another is like nails on a chalkboard.
I don't know why he is doing this and I don't know what to do about it.
My "book" says that sometimes they do it because they have pent-up stress that they need to release. So, it recommends giving them much opportunity for getting out that stress by having toys on which they can bang.
I've given Toad spatulas and other big cooking utensils to use to bang on tupperware or on his little play table or what not. He just doesn't seem that interested. He is, however interested in banging the remote control on the wooden entertainment center or on the tile floor, which just isn't okay. I just am at a loss for what to do.
I am grateful that these aren't his permanent teeth, but I hate that noise. And, I hate thinking that he might have some serious stress at such a young age. Is that really possible? What does he have to be stressed about, anyways?

So I am going to be honest with you, Rach...from one friend to another...the book is just another person's "opinion" and there are thousands of differing opinions out there probably on this very same subject...maybe Toad is doing it because it feels good or because he likes it. I'm not really sure but it's just a possibility. Two, just by reading your last handfull of posts on the blog, you sound stressed about a lot of things and it's very possible that Toad is picking up on that. That being said, I think it's time we go get those massages or manicure/pedicures with our gadabout gift certificates! See you soon!
Braden has been grinding his teeth since he's had them on top on bottom. It freaks me out too because it sounds so horrible! I asked the peditrician about it this last week and she said it's totally normal. She also said to NOT believe any of the myths out there about teething (e.g. stress). They're babies... what do they have to be stressed about?! :)
Hey friend,
so, both of my girls grinded their teeth when they were younger. juju still does it occasionally, though not like she used to. I always figured it was a new sensory experience for them to try, or else it just felt good on aching gums to be able to chomp and grind. try to find a good teething toy for him and see if that helps. I had one for the girls from discovery toys, the Super Yummy Teether, and they both LOVED it, carried it everywhere and chomped on it continually. Be patient, though. This too shall pass. Love you!!
And to throw my two cent in also...
My younger brother did it most of his life and still catches himself at night. Considering him and his lifestyle -- it's _never_ been a issue of stress. What is it? I don't know. Annoying weird habit maybe? *grin* No idea. But rest assured that Toad is probably just doing something that interests him. The teeth are new and fun and the sound probably just interests him.
No worries. Toad is as stress free as one can be. :)
